The R.O.C. Air Force
Academy's History
Believing that “building an air force can save the nation,
"the Republic of China started setting up the Aviation Class
in 1929 in Nanjing," which marked the beginning of the
Academy's history. In 1932, the class was renamed as
"Central Aviation School" and relocated to Chienchiao,
Hangchow. During the Sino-Japanese war, the school was
moved to Kunming, Yunnan and named as Air Force Academy in
1938. After wining the war against Japan, the academy
returned to Chienchiao. Yet, it had to again relocate
to Gangshan, the present air base due to the revolt of the
Chinese Communists in 1949. In September 1960, the
academy started a 4-year collegial program. It then also
recruited both male and female students into a ‘Flight
Officer Class,” a specialized flight training program
without an accredited degree. The academy has become
an educational institution where numerous youth can fulfill
their dream of aviation and nurture themselves to become
caliber officers for the Air Force.
